What Is a Hair-Safe Perfume?

Unlike your go-to eau de parfum, hair perfume is formulated specifically with your strands in mind. “Hair-safe perfumes are fragrances specifically formulated to be used on the hair without causing as much dryness or damage as a traditional alcohol-based perfume,” explains board-certified dermatologist Alexandra Bowles, DO, FAAD.

This often includes lowering the alcohol content or going alcohol-free entirely. “Conventional fragrances often contain a high concentration of alcohol, which can be drying to the hair shaft and scalp, while hair perfumes and mists are typically formulated with ingredients that are more conditioning and gentler for hair,” she adds. 

Can You Spray Regular Perfume on Your Hair?

Technically, you can spritz your regular perfume onto your hair, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should make a habit of it. Traditional fragrances can contain higher concentrations of alcohol than products formulated specifically for hair, which Dr. Bowles says can be drying to the hair shaft and scalp.

“Look for products specifically formulated and tested for use on hair, and avoid applying traditional perfume directly to the hair on a regular basis, particularly if your hair is already dry, chemically treated or damaged,” she says.

If scenting your strands is part of your fragrance routine, a product specifically labeled for use on hair is the safer bet.

How Long Does Hair Perfume Last?

According to Dr. Bowles, “a hair fragrance or mist may last anywhere from a few hours to most of the day, but lighter mists will typically fade sooner than more concentrated hair perfumes.” How long the fragrance lasts can also depend on your hair. “Hair that is dry or porous may actually hold onto fragrance longer because it can absorb and retain the fragrance molecules, whereas very smooth or oily hair may not hold scent quite as long,” she adds. 

However, it’s best to do light, multiple spritzes throughout the day instead of heavily saturating the hair all at once, Dr. Bowles says. One dermatologist tip: “Be mindful of spraying fragrance directly onto the scalp, especially if you have sensitive skin, dandruff or a history of irritation, because fragrance ingredients can potentially cause irritation or allergic reactions,” says Dr. Bowles. Instead, focus your spritzes from the mid-lengths to the ends.
