When it comes to cosmetic treatments, perhaps nothing is talked about quite as much as Botox injections. An injectable form of botulinum toxin, the popular treatment is FDA-approved to temporarily soften the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and it can be used on several areas of the face including crow’s feet, frown lines, between the brows, and the forehead. (Fun fact: It’s also used to treat chronic migraines and to curb excess underarm sweat.)

But if you’re considering Botox treatments for the first time, you may have one very important question: How long does it actually last? We spoke to New York City-based cosmetic dermatologic surgeon Howard Sobel, MD, for a definitive answer on how long Botox lasts, as well as some general background on the treatment for Botox beginners.

About the Expert:

Howard Sobel, MD, is a cosmetic dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and founder of SobelSkinRx.

The Onset: What Happens When You Get Botox?

Before the Botox is the initial consult with your derm. “First, [the patient] should start with a consultation to assess the different muscle groups, so we know where to place the Botox,” explains Dr. Sobel. Next, it’s time for the big moment. “At the time of treatment, the skin is prepped and cleaned with alcohol, and then the Botox is injected using small needles,” explains Sobel. “It is also recommended that they ice the injection spots immediately after to reduce swelling.” The dermatologist also has a “less is more” philosophy when it comes to the injectable, saying “You never want to use too much Botox on the forehead and give someone a droopy eye.”

Another important thing to keep in mind is that the effects of Botox don’t generally appear right away. “Botox results (and timing) depends on the individual, the area treated, and the depth of the wrinkle or fine line,” says Dr. Sobel. “When injected, Botox needs time to block the nerve impulse to the muscle group you are injecting. It usually takes effect in four to seven days.”

Although there is no downtime after getting Botox, there may be some mild side effects, including bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. If an allergic reaction occurs, contact your physician or get emergency care immediately.

The Results: How Long Does Botox Last?

Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the facial muscles, and results are temporary. “Botox typically lasts from three to four months, and up to six months in some cases,” says Dr. Sobel. That said, there are ways to have longer-lasting results. “Botox will always be a temporary way to encourage more youthful, smoother skin but there are some ways to prolong results,” says Dr. Sobel. “That includes a thorough skincare regimen using skin smoothing topicals like retinol and hydrating, plumping treatments like hyaluronic acid serums and moisturizers.” (The derm recommends the SOBEL SKIN RX 4.5% Retinol Night Treatment and SOBEL SKIN RX Bio Hyaluronic Cream Extreme with SD-100.) And as with any anti-aging skincare regimen, daily sunscreen is a must to protect the skin from sun damage and signs of aging.

The derm also adds that certain types of exercise could actually cause results to fade faster. “High-intensity workouts should be avoided as they speed up your metabolism, which causes muscle inflammation resulting in a reduction of the length of Botox’s effectiveness,” says Dr. Sobel. So instead of that HIIT class, opt for yoga or pilates instead (doctor’s orders!).
