If you looked up the word “complicated” in a beauty dictionary, you’d probably find a description of our relationship with liquid liner. Love it, hate it, need it, or fear it, liquid liner is one of those makeup products that takes a bit of skill and a lot of practice to master. But once you do, the results are so worth it that you might just forget about the long road it took you to get there (no promises, though).

That’s why we’re loving this video from celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert Daniel Chinchilla, who takes you through three super easy techniques for applying a perfect liquid line. Chinchilla’s work has been featured in magazines and on TV, but if you want more proof that he’s the real deal, get this: He even worked as Ariana Grande’s makeup artist for her worldwide Dangerous Woman tour, plus other appearances. Hold up, the Ariana Grande? The one who rocks a trademark bold winged liner look on the reg? Yep, that one. So if you’re gonna learn the liquid eyeliner ropes, this is an awesome place to start.

Talk to any makeup lover, and chances are, they’ll have a story or two to tell about their experience with liquid liner. (BRB, having flashbacks to that time we wanted a subtle flick for our office holiday party and ended up with a graphic liner instead.) Luckily, Chinchilla offers tips for three easy-to-achieve looks. The first is a natural line, which starts at the center of the lid. Hug the liner close to your lash line, while carefully pulling the pigment out toward the outer part of your eye. Once you’re ready to line the inner part of your eye, use the fine tip of your eyeliner brush to make the line as thin as possible—and that’s it for your natural look! To bump up the drama, place the tip of your eyeliner at the end of your eye, then flick upward at an angle. Then bring the end of the line inward, and fill in any gaps. This will give you a subtle flick that’s ideal for everyday wear (and one of our personal faves). The last liner style Chinchilla teaches is a bold wing, and—well, you’ll just have to watch and see for yourself. Ready to become a liquid liner master?
