Why Everyone’s Suddenly Asking for Soap Nails

Milky nails, bubble bath nails…soap nails? If the latest nail trends are all starting to blend together, you’re not alone. What we do know: If Hailey Bieber is getting attention for something, we should probably be in the loop. If milky nails, bubble bath nails, and soap nails are starting to feel like the same manicure with different PR teams, we get it. They all live in the clean girl universe—but the details are what set them apart.
As nail artist Sigourney Nuñez points out, “Soap nails are super sheer with a glossy finish, as if you just finished a good hand wash. So this look gives a 'your nails but better' vibe, while the other trends are more pigmented, creamy, and opaque.”
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

What Exactly Are Soap Nails?
We touched above on how soap nails differ from similar nail trends, but to further elaborate, Nuñez defines this specific trend as, “A super clean, freshly-washed look that’s sheer and barely there,” adding, “The style focuses on enhancing the natural nail versus covering it up. Think super translucent and sheer nude tones, baby soft pinks, and see-through whites. And since it’s so minimal, cuticle care and nail shaping get the spotlight.”
Soap Nails vs. Bubble Bath Nails vs. Milky Nails: What’s the Difference?
Soap Nails
The vibe: freshly washed, glossy, ultra-clean
Opacity: sheer/translucent
Color family: barely-there pinks, soft nudes, whispery whites
Finish: super glossy, glassy
Best for: the “your nails but better” crowd
Soap nails are the most minimal of the bunch. Think freshly scrubbed hands, healthy cuticles, and nails that look naturally polished rather than intentionally “done.” The finish is ultra-glossy and sheer enough to let your natural nail peek through.
Bubble Bath Nails
The vibe: classic manicure, polished neutral
Opacity: semi-sheer to semi-opaque
Color family: soft pink-beige neutrals
Finish: glossy cream finish
Best for: timeless mani lovers
Bubble bath nails sit a little closer to a traditional neutral manicure. They’re still soft and understated, but usually have more pigment and a slightly creamier finish than soap nails. (If you’ve ever brought OPI Bubble Bath to the salon, you already get it.)
Milky Nails
The vibe: creamy clean girl
Opacity: more opaque
Color family: milky whites, creamy pinks
Finish: glossy but softer/creamier
Best for: clean girl aesthetic devotees
Milky nails are the creamiest of the trio. They give that soft, blurred, almost clouded look rather than the glassy translucence of soap nails.
TL;DR: Soap nails = freshly washed. Bubble bath nails = classic neutral manicure. Milky nails = creamy clean girl polish.
Are Soap Nails Actually for You?
If you’re a maximalist, soap nails probably aren’t for you. But if you’re working on nail health, need a more subtle aesthetic for a big event, or you aren’t a fan of ice-breaking looks, soap nails are calling your name.
“They’re a great balance of chic and low-maintenance, while being clean and polished,” Nuñez explains. “This trend is subtle and understated by design, so it’s not ideal for anyone who loves a bold manicure.”
How to Get the Soap Nails Look at Home
Want to create soap nails at home? Celebrity and editorial manicurist Stephanie Stone has you covered.
Step 1: Clean Girl Energy Starts Here
“Since sheer polish does not hide nail imperfections, it’s very important your nails are neat, clean, and trim,” Stone says.
This includes cutting your nails and filing them into your desired shape. You then push back and buff around your cuticles, nipping any hangnails or dead skin. Wash any residual nail dust with soap and water, cleaning out any debris. Dry your nails and spray them with soap and water. You can also optionally dehydrate nails with a pH bonder and apply a base coat for a longer-lasting mani.
Step 2: Keep Color Barely There
Apply two coats of your sheer polish of choice, leaving some dry time between coats if you’re using an air-dry polish.
Step 3: Make It Glossy
Apply a super shiny top coat to really pull the look together.
Step 4: Moisturize Like You Mean It
Once nails are dry, hydrate the cuticles with nail oil. Super clean and moisturized cuticles are essential to this look, so you’ll want to continuously moisturize. “Your nails will thank you for it,” Stone insists.
The Final Verdict
If you’re a fan of Hailey Bieber’s nail trends, or any nails that look natural, clean, and simple, then soap nails are right up your alley. They’re also extremely easy to create, relying more on prep and upkeep than intricate polish work. If your nails are well-kept, you’re a perfect candidate for the style. If you love big and bold, this look probably isn’t for you—that is, unless you have a wedding or other big event where your nails need to look super neutral.
