What Are Zombie Cells—and What Are They Doing to Your Skin?

Blood cells, stem cells… zombie cells? Much like they sound, zombie cells are lingering inflammatory tissue—and yes, they can be spooky. We’ll get into much more below, but let’s just say they don’t serve any useful purpose, and they do require a thorough skincare regimen to ensure they don’t cause permanent skin damage.
We spoke to two experts with a deep understanding of zombie (senescent) cells, and they’re breaking down the root of these cells, how to get rid of them, and what harm they can cause if left untreated.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

MEET THE EXPERT
John E. Lewis, Ph.D., is a physiologist, voluntary associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Founder of Dr. Lewis Nutrition.
Smitha Rao is a scientist and CEO of PARËVA BEAUTY.
What Are Zombie Cells?
As we touched on above, zombie cells have stopped dividing yet haven’t died or been eliminated from tissue.
“A healthy cell divides and performs its designated function,” explains physiologist John E. Lewis, Ph.D., who has researched zombie cells at length. “When it becomes damaged or worn out, it either repairs itself or undergoes an orderly process of programmed death (apoptosis) so that a fresh, fully functional cell can take its place. A senescent cell does neither of these things. It loses the ability to divide, which means it can no longer contribute to the renewal of skin.”
What Causes Zombie Cells?
Zombie cells can develop for a number of reasons that are both preventable and out of our control. It’s not uncommon for them to arise.
“Normal, healthy cells turn into zombie cells as a result of the natural aging process, severe stress, or sun damage,” explains scientist Smitha Rao, whose skincare brand Parëva Beauty targets said cells. “Lifestyle factors like chronic stress, obesity, smoking, and pollution can cause cells to turn into zombie cells. Most of the time, cells have the ability to repair themselves so they can be most efficient, but at a certain level of stress or damage, cells lose that ability.”
Dr. Lewis notes that ultraviolet radiation from the sun “is arguably the single largest external contributor to senescence in the skin—which is why sun-exposed skin ages so visibly faster than skin that’s been protected.”
Why Is It Important to Get Rid of Zombie Cells?
Senescent zombie cells aren’t just stagnant cells—they actually do “creepy” things (you know, much like a zombie).
“They don’t lie quietly,” Dr. Lewis says. “They secrete a steady stream of damaging molecules—a mixture of inflammatory signals, growth factors, and enzymes that degrade the surrounding tissue. In your skin, the cells most affected are the fibroblasts (the cells responsible for manufacturing collagen and elastin). These are proteins that give skin its firmness, bounce, and elasticity. When a fibroblast becomes senescent, it stops producing what skin depends upon. A single zombie cell shifts from being a contributor to being a saboteur.”
How to Fight Zombie Cells
Luckily, zombie cells are preventable, and they don’t have to be forever if they arise. There are skincare products, foods, and lifestyle habits that can either keep your cells from entering “Halloween status,” or kick them to the curb altogether.
“Daily sun protection, sufficient sleep, regular physical activity, and effective stress management each reduce the rate at which new zombie cells are created,” Dr. Lewis says.
The expert, who has spent much of his career researching how nutrition impacts the skin, adds, “Real cellular beauty is built on a colorful, whole-food, plant-rich plate, and it is not built through restriction or starvation. Severe, restrictive dieting deprives skin of the nutrients it needs to repair and renew itself, so the popular instinct to eat less in pursuit of better skin is, biologically, exactly backward.”
Rao also emphasizes the importance of a healthy, balanced lifestyle, while also shedding light on skincare, which can tackle these senescent cells. She personally suggests applying her PARËVA BEAUTY COLL20 Gel Cream Moisturizer, which uses a proprietary Molecur 3 technology.
“It maintains the hallmarks of youth by harnessing the power of plant stem cells from Switzerland,” she says. “They directly influence exosomes and NAD+, mitigating UV-induced damage, and targeting zombie cells.”
In fact, the skincare brand ONESKIN’s whole ethos is centered around preventing and targeting said cells. The brand says its proprietary OS-01 peptide was the first shown to reduce markers associated with cellular senescence. If you’re looking for an entry point into the brand, we suggest the OS-01 Face Moisturizer.
We’ve also personally tried the ACURE Zombie Cell Clarifying System, which includes a detox and renewal ritual of a clarifying mask and serum.
Final Thoughts
As aging, lifestyle factors, and environmental stressors take their toll, zombie cells (or senescent, lingering dead cells that do more harm than good) can develop. Signs of zombie cells are evident in elasticity decrease, inflamed skin, and other traditional signs of aging. One key sign of impact is visible sun damage, in the form of crepey skin and wrinkles. The good news is, strong sleep habits, nutritious diet, and targeted skincare can help prevent and kick these cells to the curb.
