What Is Gray Blending?

Alyson Berry, founder of Mane + Magnolia and the Seamless Grow Out® method, says it’s “a way to incorporate your gray strategically to achieve a lower-maintenance color. For some that may mean fully embracing their natural gray so they no longer have to color their hair, and for others it may mean trying alternatives to permanent color such as highlights and lowlights or a more translucent color to help their gray look like a ‘little highlight’ rather than a harsh ‘gray root.’ This middle ground is the route most of our clients choose.”

Seattle-based hairstylist Alexander Scott has a specific technique he uses to achieve this look. “At the roots, we use a sheer demi-permanent color to softly bridge the new growth with the previously colored ends, shifting the bright white hairs to appear like natural-toned highlights. In the middle and ends, we incorporate fine, light pieces, breaking up the previous gray coverage and adding more of these natural-toned highlights. The result is a more balanced overall color that is softer in tone and with a more gradual grow-out. With each visit, the color becomes softer and more blended, allowing for more time between visits.”

Orange County-based hairstylist Tara Tebay traces some of gray blending’s rise in popularity back to the pandemic, when salon closures prompted many people to grow out their natural gray for the first time. Seeing others embrace their silver strands helped inspire more people to do the same. “It has become a movement of people choosing to fight against the stigma around gray hair and embrace their natural beauty,” she says.

Who Is Gray Blending Best For?

Ideally, someone with gray hair who doesn’t mind it showing is the best candidate for gray blending. “Gray blending is perfect for anyone looking to work with their natural gray instead of fighting with it. And if you’re fed up with monthly root touch-ups, this is definitely for you,” says Scott. Berry adds that “While it is best suited for those with less than 75% gray, a gray blending specialist can help to offer outside-the-box solutions that work for a wide variety of gray patterns.”

There are a few clients for whom it wouldn’t work best, including those who switch salons frequently, notes Scott. “For the best results, you’ll want to build your plan with your colorist and commit to building up the blend over a few visits.”

“Those who do not want their natural gray hair to show at all and want it completely covered would not be a good candidate for gray blending,” adds Tebay.

What to Ask for at the Salon for Gray Blending

Gray blending isn’t necessarily a one-appointment transformation, so your first step is finding a colorist who specializes in the technique. Look through their portfolio for clients whose natural color and gray pattern resemble yours, and bring inspiration photos that show where you’d eventually like your color to land.

“When blending your grays, it’s important to find a gray blending specialist who can help you navigate your options, prepare you for what to expect, and offer solutions that are both healthy and efficient,” says Berry.

At your consultation, be upfront about your color history, how frequently you’re willing to visit the salon, and how much of your natural gray you ultimately want to show. Your colorist can then determine whether highlights, lowlights, demi-permanent color, or a combination of techniques will create the most seamless transition.

And prepare to play the long game. “Once you have found your person, let them guide you through the journey and keep in mind that with many techniques, it gets better over time,” says Scott. Gray blending may take several appointments as your previous color grows out and your natural silver becomes more incorporated into the overall look.
