In recent years, the personal care industry has witnessed a significant shift with the rise of whole-body deodorants, a comprehensive solution beyond the traditional underarm focus. LUME, formulated by gynecologist Dr. Shannon Klingman, is a notable product leading this trend. Whole-body deodorants are designed to address body odor across various body parts, providing a more holistic approach to personal hygiene. Unlike conventional antiperspirants that primarily target armpits to reduce excessive sweating, these innovative formulations offer all-day freshness from head to toe, making them a game-changer in the wellness and skincare realms.

Retailers have quickly embraced this burgeoning market, stocking their shelves with full-body deodorants that cater to consumers seeking more comprehensive body product solutions. The rise of whole-body deo reflects a growing awareness of the importance of full-body care in personal wellness routines. According to medical professionals such as dermatologists, obstetrics, and gynecology, the effectiveness of these products lies in their unique formulations, which are safe for all skin types, making them an inclusive option for many. As consumers become more informed about the benefits of full-body deodorants, the demand for these versatile products is expected to surge, revolutionizing how we approach personal care. Ahead, we spoke with experts to give the complete rundown on all things full-body deodorants and how best to incorporate these new products into your body care routine.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

What Is a Full-Body Deodorant?

Whole-body deodorants are specifically designed to be used on areas of the body beyond just the armpits. According to dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, these products offer protection against odor and help absorb unwanted moisture, providing a comprehensive solution for body odor and sweat. “The Dove Whole Body Deodorant collection, for example, includes both deodorant sticks and creams that are formulated to be gentle yet effective on various parts of the body,” says Dr. Gohara. This approach caters to the modern consumer’s need for versatile body products that ensure all-day freshness, coverage, and comfort.

How Does Full-Body Deodorant Work?

Whole-body deodorants work by addressing both odor and moisture across different areas of the body. “The Dove Whole Body Deodorant stick is specifically formulated to minimize friction and prevent chafing, making it ideal for areas prone to rubbing,” explains Dr. Gohara. “The kind-to-skin ingredients ensure a smooth application, providing a protective barrier that keeps the skin comfortable while effectively controlling odor.” This dual action makes whole-body deodorants a valuable addition to personal care routines, especially for those seeking additional protection against body odor and sweat.

Can You Really Use It Anywhere?

Yes, whole-body deodorants can be used on many parts of the body, though there are some exceptions. Diane Keenan, Associate Director of R&D at Unilever, highlights that the Dove Whole Body Deodorant Stick is designed for external use on any area where you experience moisture, odor, or friction, excluding intimate areas.

Regular Deodorant vs. Full-Body Deodorant

The primary difference between regular deodorants and whole-body deodorants lies in their formulation and intended use. “Regular deodorants are typically designed solely for underarm application to control odor and, in some cases, reduce sweating,” explains Keenan. “In contrast, whole-body deodorants like the Dove Whole Body Deodorant offer all-day odor protection and anti-friction benefits that cater to multiple areas of the body,” says Dr. Gohara. Keenan points out that Dove Whole Body Deodorant is formulated explicitly for full-body use, providing a viable solution to remain fresh all over the body.

How to Use Full-Body Deodorant

1. Identify Target Areas: Determine where you experience moisture, odor, or friction (ex: underarms, back, chest, feet).

2. Application of Deodorant Stick: “Swipe the DOVE Whole Body Deodorant Stick on the target areas as you would on your underarms, avoiding eyes and private parts,” explains Keenan.

3. Application of Deodorant Cream: “Squeeze a small amount of DOVE Whole Body Deo Cream directly from the tube and rub it onto the desired area, avoiding eyes. Remember, a little goes a long way,” advises Keenan.

4. Application of Deodorant Spray: Hold the spray can about arm’s length away from your skin and spray continuously over the desired area.

5. Ensure Proper Coverage: Apply an even layer of deodorant on the chosen areas to ensure complete protection and effectiveness. Cover the skin evenly without over-saturating, and ensure the product is fully dry before dressing to prevent residue or staining.
