Take a walk down almost any beauty aisle and you’ll still find plenty of clues telling you who a product is supposedly “for.” Maybe it’s pastel packaging and florals on one shelf, dark bottles and woodsy scents on another. But here’s the thing: Your moisturizer doesn’t know your gender—and neither does your shampoo.

Beauty has historically been marketed along gender lines, but the formulas themselves aren't necessarily playing by those same rules. And increasingly, fragrance is following suit. Notes once heavily marketed toward one gender are showing up everywhere, making the idea of a strictly “masculine” or “feminine” scent feel less relevant than ever.

“Sandalwood is being worn by more and more women,” says Benjamin Bernet, co-founder of BRAVO SIERRA body care. “Men are wearing cherry, vanilla, and other notes that would have been unthinkable in a men's fragrance ten years ago. Once the notes stop carrying a gender, you can build something with a real point of view that still belongs to everyone.”

What Does Gender-Neutral Beauty Actually Mean?

Gender-neutral beauty isn't necessarily about removing color, fragrance, or personality from a product. Increasingly, it's about letting go of the idea that certain ingredients, scents, or aesthetics inherently belong to one gender.

“Most formulas were never gendered in the first place, only the marketing was,” says Bernet. “Skin is skin. Scent is the exception. It's by far the biggest gender signal in personal care.”

Even fragrance conventions are changing. Traditionally, Bernet explains, florals were marketed as feminine while woods skewed masculine. “Which meant that for years the easiest way to make a product unisex was to make it fragrance-free. That's changed fast,” he says. “Unisex used to mean subtraction, and today it means composition.”
