Remember when lip products had one job? A lipstick gave you color. A gloss gave you shine. A balm lived at the bottom of your bag and made a brief appearance every winter when your lips staged a revolt.

Not anymore.

Today's lip products are pulling double (sometimes triple) duty. Alongside pigment and shine, beauty lovers now expect hydration, barrier support, plumping benefits, and ingredients you'd normally find in a skincare routine. Suddenly, our glosses contain peptides. Our lipsticks are packed with nourishing oils. And our overnight lip masks are earning permanent spots on our nightstands.

The shift isn't happening by accident. According to IPSY's Beauty Discovery Report, interest in lip oils, treatments, masks, and other care-first formulas continues to grow as consumers look for products that do more than just look pretty. We're entering a new era of lip products—one where healthy-looking lips are just as important as the color on top of them.

So what sparked the change? We tapped beauty experts and dug into the trends driving the lip-care boom.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Lip Products Are No Longer Just Makeup

For years, lip products were judged by a pretty simple set of criteria: How pigmented are they? How shiny are they? How long do they last? Today, the conversation looks very different.

Beauty lovers aren't just shopping for color anymore. They're shopping for comfort. They're looking for products that hydrate while they wear them, help smooth the appearance of lip lines, support the lip barrier, and leave lips feeling better at the end of the day than they did at the beginning.

In other words, the line between makeup and skincare is getting blurrier by the minute.

The beauty industry has a name for this shift: hybrid beauty. Instead of buying separate products for aesthetics and care, consumers increasingly want formulas that do both. Think skin tints infused with skincare ingredients, scalp serums disguised as styling products, and lip oils that feel like treatment masks with a side of shine.

And honestly? It makes sense. If your foundation can contain skincare benefits, why shouldn't your favorite lip gloss?

According to IPSY's 2026 Beauty Discovery Report, lip-care  purchases grew 10% year over year in 2025, fueled by major gains in lip plumper (+182%), lip mask (+56%), and lip oil (+36%). At the same time, traditional lip color categories declined overall, signaling a clear shift in consumer priorities.

Why Lip Care Is Having a Major Moment

If it feels like every new lip launch suddenly contains peptides, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid, you're not imagining things. Several beauty trends have collided to create the lip-care boom we're seeing today.

We're Prioritizing Skin Health Everywhere

The "skinification" trend has officially left the skincare aisle.

First, we started paying closer attention to scalp health. Then body care got the skincare treatment. Now lips are getting the same level of attention. Consumers are more ingredient-savvy than ever, and they understand that healthy-looking skin starts with supporting the barrier, including the delicate skin on their lips.

Multitasking  Products Are Winning

Let's be honest: Most of us aren't looking to add more steps to our routines. Products that combine color, hydration, treatment, and protection in a single swipe offer something people always want more of…convenience. When a lip oil can deliver shine, moisture, and nourishment all at once, it's easy to see why these formulas are taking over.

Barrier Care Is Expanding Beyond Skin

A few years ago, “skin barrier” wasn't exactly everyday vocabulary. Now it's one of the biggest concepts in beauty.

As consumers become more educated about barrier health, they're realizing that lips need support, too. Since lips don't produce oil the same way the rest of our skin does, they're often one of the first places dryness, irritation, and dehydration show up. That's making barrier-supporting ingredients more desirable than ever in lip products.

The New Generation of Lip Products

Not all lip products are evolving in the same way. Some are borrowing from skincare, some are reinventing makeup staples, and some are creating entirely new categories. Here's what's leading the lip-care revolution.

Lip Oils

If gloss and a treatment serum had a very chic baby, it would be a lip oil. Lightweight, non-sticky, and packed with nourishing ingredients, lip oils deliver the shine beauty lovers want with the hydration their lips actually need. They're one of the fastest-growing categories in the lip space, and for good reason. Unlike traditional glosses, many lip oils leave lips feeling softer long after the shine fades.

Try: MERIT BEAUTY Shade Slick Tinted Lip Oil, which combines sheer color with a cushiony, moisturizing feel that makes reapplying a pleasure rather than a chore.

Treatment Balms

Today's lip balms aren't just temporary fixes; they're skincare in disguise. Many modern formulas are infused with ingredients like peptides, ceramides, squalane, and plant oils to help support the lip barrier and lock in moisture. Instead of simply coating lips, they're designed to actively improve how lips look and feel over time. Think of them as your everyday maintenance product: easy to use, impossible to quit.

Lip Masks

Lip masks have officially graduated from an occasional self-care treat to a nightly essential. These richer formulas are designed to work while you sleep, helping replenish moisture, smooth rough texture, and support overnight repair. If you've ever woken up wondering why your lips suddenly look plumper and feel softer, your lip mask probably deserves the credit.

Try: DRUNK ELEPHANT Plump-C™ Tripeptide Lippe Mask With Vitamin C, an overnight treatment packed with moisture-loving ingredients that helps lips look smoother, softer, and more hydrated by morning.

Hybrid Lipsticks & Glosses

Beauty lovers no longer want to choose between color and comfort. The latest generation of lipsticks, glosses, and tinted balms delivers pigment while also providing hydration, nourishment, and a more comfortable wear experience. The result? Products that look like makeup but behave a lot more like skincare. It's one of the biggest signs that the line between the two categories is disappearing.

Plumping Treatments

Not long ago, lip plumpers had a reputation for delivering results at the expense of comfort. Today's formulas take a more sophisticated approach. Many use hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid alongside peptides and nourishing oils to help lips appear fuller, smoother, and more pillowy without feeling like your lips are being attacked by a swarm of angry bees.

The goal isn't just bigger-looking lips. It's healthier-looking lips, too.

The Bottom Line

The lip category has come a long way from the days of choosing between a lipstick, a gloss, and Chapstick.

Today's beauty consumers expect more, and brands are delivering. Whether it's a lip oil that hydrates like a serum, a gloss infused with treatment ingredients, or an overnight mask that helps restore moisture while you sleep, the newest generation of lip products is designed to do more than simply look good.

In other words, the future of lip products isn't choosing between care and color—it's expecting both. And judging by the rise of lip oils, masks, plumpers, and other treatment-first formulas, we aren't going back.
