Aging happens to us all—but how gracefully the process unfolds is where we can exercise a little bit of control. And look, we love a good skincare routine—retinol, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, the works. But when it comes to keeping skin looking youthful, topicals can only do so much to address the signs of aging. More specifically, sagging skin. And tbh, we don’t really want to get a face or neck lift. Thanks to Korean technology (the motherland of good skincare), we don’t have to. We’re about to put you on to XERF, a non-invasive skin-tightening treatment that treats, you guessed it, sagging skin on the face, jaw, neck, and other areas of the body. Below, we dive into everything you need to know about the treatment that was recently FDA-cleared in the US.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

MEET THE EXPERT

Charlotte Sarshad, MD, is a board-certified physician specializing in medical cosmetic treatments.

Walter Joseph, MD, is a Beverly Hills board-certified plastic surgeon.

Liz Carruthers is the Director of Marketing Communications at Cynosure Lutronic.

What Is XERF?

First, what is XERF? “XERF is a next-generation radiofrequency skin tightening technology designed to improve skin laxity, contour, and overall skin quality without surgery,” explains board-certified plastic surgeon Walter Joseph, MD. “What makes it especially exciting is its ability to deliver controlled thermal energy in a very precise and comfortable way, allowing us to target collagen remodeling with virtually no downtime. I see it as a bridge between traditional noninvasive treatments and more aggressive surgical approaches for the right patient.”

Charlotte Sarshad, MD, a board-certified physician, explains that XERF works by delivering “controlled radiofrequency energy into different layers of the skin. The heat generated by the RF energy causes collagen fibers to contract and stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin over time. This helps improve skin firmness, texture, and lifting without surgery or significant downtime.”

The Biggest Benefits of XERF

1. It Helps Tighten Skin

The most sought-after benefit is firmer, tighter skin on the face and neck. But it doesn’t stop there. Dr. Joseph shares, “It works well on the face, neck, jawline, and even areas of the body where skin laxity becomes difficult to treat.”

2. It’s Highly Customizable

Everyone’s skin issues are unique, which makes XERF a hero. “Providers can tailor the treatment using multiple depth settings and intensity levels based on each patient’s unique skin profile, treatment goals, and comfort level,” says Liz Carruthers, Director of Marketing Communications at Cynosure Lutronic. “This personalized approach makes it appropriate for all skin types.”

3. It Doesn’t Require Surgery

There’s no surgery with XERF, as it’s a non-invasive treatment. This means there is “little to minimal downtime,” according to Dr. Sarshad. You can be in, out, and on with your day after the treatment.

“My patients also appreciate the time saved not having to numb for XERF and the treatments being extremely well-tolerated,” says Dr. Joseph.

4. You'll See Both Immediate and Long-Term Results

Results are shown almost instantly, with Carruthers sharing, “It delivers both immediate and lasting skin-tightening results.” So not only does it work right away, but it will help improve skin elasticity over time.

5. It Rebuilds Collagen and Elastin

Collagen and elastin are something we lose as we age. With the help of XERF, you can stimulate collagen and elastin production to create firmer-looking skin in areas that are beginning to lose firmness.

Who Is XERF Best for?

XERF works for just about anyone, but especially those who have noticeable signs of aging. “XERF is great for patients who are starting to notice mild to moderate skin laxity and want tightening without surgery. It’s commonly used for jawline softening or jowls, loose skin of the neck, mild sagging of the cheeks, and patients wanting preventative collagen stimulation and anti-aging maintenance,” says Dr. Sarshad.

Dr. Joseph recommends it for “patients in their 30s through 50s who are starting to notice changes in jawline definition, neck laxity, or skin crepiness but are not yet ready for surgical intervention.”

XERF also works on all skin tones and types. With the ability to customize it per patient, it can deliver unique results depending on what you’re looking for.

Who Should Avoid XERF?

Of course, XERF isn’t for everyone. “Patients with severe skin laxity or significant tissue descent may ultimately benefit more from surgical intervention rather than relying solely on energy-based treatments,” notes Dr. Joseph.

The experts all recommend that those who are pregnant or patients with certain implanted medical or electrical devices should avoid XERF.

How Should Someone Prepare For XERF?

You should always start with a consultation with a licensed professional to ensure you get what you’re hoping for out of the experience. “Choosing an experienced provider who understands facial anatomy and energy-based devices is critical for both safety and outcomes,” emphasizes Dr. Joseph. It’s important to do your research on your provider.

Ahead of the treatment, Dr. Sarshad says to:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure before treatment.

  • Stay well hydrated.

  • Drink 2–3 liters of water starting the day before.

  • Let your provider know if you have any implanted electronic devices, metal devices in your body, active infections, or certain medical conditions.

  • Understand that collagen remodeling takes time, so results continue improving over weeks to months.

What to Know About XERF Aftercare?

Again, XERF is non-invasive, so there isn’t a long recovery process. Dr. Sarshad recommends avoiding excess heat, wearing sunscreen, and staying hydrated.

Dr. Joseph echoes this sentiment. “I generally recommend gentle skincare, hydration, sun protection, and avoiding exposure to excessive heat immediately after treatment. Supporting the skin barrier and hydration after any energy-based procedure is important for optimizing recovery and results.”

Final Thoughts

“The future of aesthetics is not about making people look different—it’s about helping them age better and maintain healthier, stronger skin over time,” says Dr. Joseph. “Technologies like XERF fit beautifully into that evolution because they help stimulate the body’s own regenerative processes in a natural-looking way.”

If you want to improve the appearance of aging skin, give XERF a try.
