The Blurred Lip Trend Is Everywhere—Here’s How to Get It

Maddie Aberman

There was a time when the goal was sharp lines, overlined edges, and a Cupid’s bow you could spot from across the room. But lately? We’re softening everything.
Enter: blurred lips—the effortlessly cool, slightly undone lip look that’s everywhere right now. Think diffused edges, color that melts into your natural lip tone, and that just-bitten, lived-in finish that somehow makes your whole face look more expensive.
And yes, while the trend has roots in K-beauty, its recent glow-up is less “gradient tutorial” and more “I dabbed this on in the back of an Uber and still look incredible.” It’s lower effort, more forgiving, and (arguably) way more wearable.
Ahead, exactly how to get the look—plus the modern ways everyone’s wearing it now.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

How to Create the Blurred Lip Look
Good news: this trend is way easier than it looks. The blurred lip is all about less precision, more payoff, and once you get the hang of it, it’s basically impossible to mess up. While the trend has evolved (shoutout to its “lip mud” era), the modern version is softer, more wearable, and all about diffused color that melts into your lips. Follow these steps for a perfectly undone finish every time.
1. Prep Your Lips
Just like your skin, your lips need a little prep moment before you go in with pigment. Smooth, hydrated lips = a better blur (and no flaky surprises).
“As with any lip look, I like to prep the lips before I start any of my makeup to ensure they are hydrated for makeup application. I like to use a hydrating balm,” says makeup artist Jamie Greenberg.
Translation: don’t skip this step. Reach for something nourishing (like TATCHA Camellia Gold Spun Moisturizing Lip Balm), let it sink in, then blot off any excess so your lip color can actually grip.
2. Skip the Lip Liner (Trust!)
Yep—this is your permission slip to ditch precision. “Go right in with your favorite lipstick shade. Start from the inside portion of your lips and work to the perimeter, focusing the color on the inner portions,” says Greenberg.
The key here is placement, not perfection. Concentrating color in the center gives you that natural gradient effect from the jump.
When it comes to formulas, think soft and buildable. A creamy lipstick, balm, or tint will give you way more flexibility than anything super opaque. If you’re easing into the trend, start sheer—you can always build. We love YSL Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick for its juicy color, mirror-like shine, and major hydration.
3. Tap, Don’t Swipe
This is where the magic happens. “Take your finger (or smudge brush) to blend away the harsh lines on the perimeter of your lips. The goal for this is to look effortless, so if you get outside of the lines, you did it right,” says Greenberg.
Use your fingertip to gently tap and diffuse the edges, don’t drag. Work from the center outward to create that soft, hazy fade. Think blurred, not blended to perfection.
Pro tip: fingers give you the most control here (and honestly, the best finish).
4. Keep It Soft and Flexible
“The look is supposed to be messy and imperfect, getting a bit outside of the lines is your best friend for this one,” adds Jamie.
That also means choosing the right formulas. Jamie recommends options like a soft satin lipstick or a creamy pigment balm, basically anything you can move around easily with your fingers.
What to avoid? Super longwear, ultra-matte formulas. We love them for bolder looks, but for the blurred trend, they set too quickly and don’t give you enough playtime to blur. If you do go matte, make sure it has a velvety, flexible finish that won’t lock into place immediately.
Final Thoughts
If the last few years were all about precision, blurred lips are the reset we didn’t know we needed. They’re softer. Easier. More forgiving. And somehow still make your entire look feel more elevated with half the effort. So whether you’re going full monochrome, testing a bold blurred red, or just tapping on a tint before running out the door—consider this your sign to loosen your grip (literally).
Because the best lip looks right now? They’re not perfect. They’re perfectly undone.
