Everything to Know About Hair-Minimizing Lotion

While some people are all about embracing their natural attributes, to others, hairy arms, legs, armpits, and sometimes even the face, can be a nuisance. It’s all about personal preference, and for those who like feeling soft and smooth, they’ll go to great lengths to get rid of the hair on their body. Whether by shaving, waxing, or laser hair removal, body-hair maintenance can be a dedicated part of one’s self-care routine or bath or shower experience. To add to the various methods of hair maintenance, we’ve recently seen a rise in hair-minimizing lotion. Keep reading for everything to know about this inhibitor, and find out if it’s right for you.

What Is Hair-Minimizing Lotion?
Hair-minimizing lotion is a topically applied formula that’s designed to be slathered on post-shave or after another form of hair removal. Once applied, its job is to slow hair growth and hair density. While it won’t eliminate hair altogether, it can make the hair much finer by inhibiting enzymes that promote hair regrowth. Many of the products include nourishing and hydrating ingredients like aloe and other plant and leaf extracts found in general skincare.
What’s the Difference Between Hair-Minimizing Lotion and Depilatory Lotion?
When we initially started hearing buzz about hair-minimizing body lotion, we were confused. We don’t know about you, but we grew up in the era of NAIR. As we began to research, however, we realized that longstanding NAIR is an example of a depilatory lotion. This is something made with primary ingredients like thioglycolic acid, or others that break down and degrade keratin—a natural protein found in hair. Basically, a depilatory lotion temporarily removes hair at the surface of the skin. It doesn’t change anything in terms of long-term growth. You get shave-like results, but without use of a razor. These are chemical-based formulas, and if left on too long, they can burn the skin. If used on sensitive skin, we recommend consulting with a dermatologist first.
Hair-minimizing lotion, however, slows hair regrowth, combats excessive hair growth, and lessens the need for hair removal. It doesn’t actually remove hair, but makes its growth less frequent.
Is Hair-Minimizing Lotion Generally Considered Safe?
Where depilatory lotions and creams are acid-based and can negatively impact the skin if left on too long, hair minimizers are known to be more gentle and offer a gradual effect. There isn’t a ton of research available on this growing innovation, but natural brands like TREE HUT, for example, entered the space to critical acclaim (their body butter of note has since been discontinued, however). If you want to splurge, the KERACELL Body Hair Minimizing Lotion With Human Stem Cell Extract is among the hair-minimizing products we see pop up. And for a budget buy, there’s the COMPLETELY BARE Don't Grow There Body Moisturizer and Hair Growth Inhibitor, made from a white willow bark, shea butter, and a plant extract formulation. It also targets ingrown hair and razor bumps.
The Final Verdict on Hair-Minimizing Lotions
If you’re looking for a pain-free hair removal method and your skin is too sensitive for depilatory lotions, then hair-minimizing lotions might be for you. You’ll love the gentle and gradual benefits and the less-frequent hair-removal needs.
