Going gray just got a whole lot more glamorous. While spotting your first silver strand might once have sent you straight to the salon, it’s now about stepping into the spotlight and owning your new natural shade. ICYMI, Sarah Jessica Parker just made the case for gray blending—otherwise known as the solution to constant root touch-ups—while Pamela Anderson is proving vintage curls look extra special on mature hair. Still, our favorite take on the salt-and-pepper look has to be that of Olivia Colman, who recently traded out her signature pixie cut for romantic gray ringlets.
Though we haven’t yet seen her steamy new film “Wicker”—in which, yes, Alexander Skarsgård plays a man made of wicker—we can’t help but swoon over the hairstyles Colman has brought to the press tour. Cascading curls, windswept updos, and more have brought out her natural texture and color in a way we definitely want to recreate. Ahead, check out tips from her hairstylist, Clayton Hawkins, on how to get her “fairytale curls.”

How to Get Olivia Colman’s Salt-and-Pepper Curls
What makes Colman’s curls so fantastical? It’s a mix of tools and products, Hawkins told “Vogue.” After prepping the hair with AMIKA's Frizz Me Not Hydrating Anti-Frizz Treatment, he diffused the star's hair with a L'ORÉAL Airlight Pro hair dryer, then used a half-inch curling iron to create sporadically spaced curls. The small-but-mighty hot tool is great for adding volume and texture to hair. For even more volume, however, Hawkins used some SEXY HAIR Powder Play Lite Soft Volumizing & Texturizing Powder at the roots, then teased hair with a wide-tooth comb.
As for keeping silver hair shining, we recommend using a purple shampoo. They’re not just for blondes! The toning agent will help keep your color bright instead of dull, yellowed, or discolored in any way.
The Secret Behind Olivia Colman's Hair Transformation
Of course, if you’re wondering how Colman went from a short, choppy pixie to long, gray curls, we can confirm the actress used hair extensions for her new length. (If you take a peek at photos, you can spot where her salt-and-pepper curls meet her supplemental ones.) Inanch Emir, who custom-made Colman’s extensions, revealed on Instagram that four different shades of natural gray were used to recreate the depth, dimension and movement of the actress’s own hair. The result? A beautifully blended ‘do capable of capturing the world’s attention—and good enough to have us Googling what hair growth serum she used.
That said, the most important takeaway of Colman’s new ‘do isn’t how great her hair looks. (Okay, that’s part of it.) What we love is how she’s demonstrated that gray hair isn’t something to hide; instead, it’s something to celebrate. Whether you replicate her flowing curls or opt for her original shaggy cut, just know confidence is the real secret behind her glowing look.
