It’s the season of the witch—sea witch that is. In Pinterest’s annual trend prediction roundup, the platform reported that one of the biggest trends to come in 2025 is mermaid themed makeup, specifically dark mermaid makeup which is up over 90% on Google search. Why? It seems we’re all looking for a bit of whimsy these days, and pretending to be one of the most mystical and alluring creatures of the sea is a fun way to do it.

But dark mermaid makeup is a bit different than what you might think of when it comes to the finned creatures. Sure, glitter and sparkle will be present, but there’s a sultry element to this look that feels like a siren call straight from the sea. To find out more about where this trend began and how you can recreate it at home, we spoke with beauty educator Lindsay Worthen.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Behind the Dark Mermaid Makeup Trend

Mermaid makeup is not a new concept, in fact, mermaid core was one of the biggest trends of 2023, thanks to the launch of the live action Little Mermaid film, and dark mermaid makeup is another iteration of that.

“While [dark mermaid makeup] retains elements of the ethereal, oceanic aesthetic that includes shimmery highlighters and metallic accents, it also incorporates darker, more dramatic features to create a grungier and sassier vibe,” explains Worthen. “This trend draws inspiration from the growing appeal of ‘sea witchery’ and the darker side of fantasy aesthetics.”

How to Get the Dark Mermaid Makeup Look

1. Start With Semi-Matte Skin

Although you might think an all-over wet look would be perfect for dark mermaid makeup, Worthen says a semi-matte or soft matte look is actually better. This is so the eyes can really shine in the look, which Worthen says should be the focus of your dark mermaid makeup. For this, use a lightweight, buildable foundation. We love STUDIOMAKEUP’s Flawless Skin Foundation, which is buildable and has light-reflecting pigments.

2. Be Strategic With Highlighter

Have you ever seen a mermaid who wasn’t shining like the glittering reflection of the ocean? Even dark mermaids like to catch a bit of light-reflecting rays. “Concentrate the highlighter on the cheekbones, brow bones, and the tip of the nose,” says Worthen. “Opt for a cool-toned contour to sculpt the face and add subtle dimension, keeping the overall effect natural but striking.”

3. Have Fun With Blush

Playing with non-traditional blush colors is a great way to tap into your dark inner sea witch. Try playing with purples or blue hues instead of traditional peaches. “For the cheeks, stick to a cool-toned blush applied higher on the cheekbones for a lifted appearance,” says Worthen. “Blend upward and outward to create a subtle flush that feels ethereal. Avoid overly warm tones.”

4. Eye Put a Spell On You

The eyes are without a doubt the most important part of a dark mermaid look and they can be played up in a number of different ways. First, for eyeshadow, think of a blend of “smoky grays, cool-toned browns, and hints of metallic navy or silver to emulate the deep, shadowy depths of the ocean,” says Worthen. When you add shimmer (or even rhinestones or pearl drops!), she suggests focusing on the inner corners or centers of the lids for a touch of light.

From there, “use a sharp black liquid liner to create an elongated, siren-like cat eye,” says Worthen. “It’s important to focus on precision and extend the liner slightly beyond the outer corners for a dagger effect.” One of our favorite liquid liners is the PHASE ZERO MAKEUP Liquid Eyeliner. “Finish with volumizing mascara or false lashes to enhance the drama.”

5. Drop The Anchor

If you picture an anchor, it’s shaped like two eyes, a nose, and finally, the lips. “The lips anchor the dark mermaid aesthetic with sultry, deep tones,” says Worthen. “Start by slightly overlining your lips with a '90s-inspired dark nude or chocolate-brown liner. Fill them in with a satin or semi-matte lipstick. You can also create a gradient effect by blending a darker shade around the edges and lighter nude or shimmer in the center. Top with a gloss or keep it matte for a grungier edge.” Our favorite nude? BAREMINERALS GEN NUDE™ Radiant Lipstick. We love that it’s made with cocoa butter for a hydrating feel.
